A Simple Guide to Fertility Monitors
Urine monitors are but one of the most common types of fertility monitor. These products work by testing for LH hormones in the urine. Though they are relatively accurate, they not only require that you work with urine on a frequent basis, but they also force you to purchase monthly sets of test strips or discs. At about $25.00 to $50.00 a set, they can be an expensive investment.

If you'd rather avoid the daily contact with urine and the repeated purchasing of test strips, you might consider using a saliva monitor. These fertility monitors, commonly referred to as ferning scopes, use a small sample of saliva to determine your fertility status. However, though they tend to be the most cost-effective form of fertility monitor, they aren't always easy to read: if you had a hard time using microscopes during your days in biology lab, you might want to pass on the ferning scopes.

Electrolyte monitors, like OvaCue, are generally considered to be the most accurate and efficient way to predict a woman's fertility. These also use saliva to determine fertility, but unlike ferning scopes, there are no crystallized samples to examine. And once you purchase the monitor, there's nothing more you have to buy: you're set for the rest of your reproductive life.
